The Alexa World ranking is a good indication of the number of visitors a Website receives, but it’s important to know that the goal post move with Alexas world ranking and their country rankings; they move daily!
For example, suppose mysite.com has a ranking of 800,000 in the world rankings, it is perfectly possible for mysite.com to receive more visitors for the next two days and the world ranking number to change to 825,000 i.e. to go down 25000 positions in the world.
The explanation is simple, Alexa rankings are relative, they are comparative, and so in the example of dropping 25,000 positions in two days even when your own server logs show you have had more visitors over those same two days, all the other sites that that were ranked near your ranking received even more visitors over those two days.
It’s also common for other sites that were not ranked near mysite.com to have changed their rankings more dramatically e.g. a site that may have been much more popular e.g. 700,000 may have changed rank by 100,000 positions, similarly a site ranked 900,000 may also have changed rank by 100,000 positions, in each case the changes may move other sites up or down the rankings which affects mysites.com
